Venous Insufficiency and Arterial Disorders
Increased pressure in the veins of the lower body brought about by an insufficiency in the functioning of valves will lead to an increase of filtration into the tissues. This presents as oedema when the lymph system is unable to cope with the increased demand.
Initially the legs may look slim during the early part of day but thicken as the day progresses with symptoms of heaviness, aching and skin tightness being reported. If the condition is left untreated the oedema will eventually become permanent.
MLD will not solve the problem of the venous insufficiency. It will however stimulate the lymph system to remove the oedema and hence reduce the symptoms of the condition. The additional use of compression hosiery will support the veins and tissues and serves to continue to remove fluid from the effected area.
Venous insufficiency if left untreated will eventually lead to long term oedema. This will in turn lead to the development of fibrosis in the effected area and a reduced blood supply to the effected tissues. The normal processes of cell metabolism are impaired and tissue cells may die leading eventually to ulcer formation.
MLD is extremely effective in the treatment of venous ulcers. A course of treatment over a period of consecutive days is normally sufficient to see results in the healing process.
